When I'm rping with someone and their character is in some parallel dimension having their own conversation. My character just insulted your character's detective skills. Why is your character carrying along like they're having a heartfelt conversation about puppies? We're not talking about puppies and if you wanted to talk about them you could have tagged a billion other moeblobs and not my black market surgeon.

This, unless it's IC for one character to basically have their own conversations whenever it doesn't go the way they want. (There are a couple of characters like that, but it's usually not those guys who are guilty of this.)

I really hate this, especially if my character did or said something completely blatant that should change the tone of the interaction if the other player wasn't asleep at the wheel

feels like talking to a canned npc from an rpg video game

I don't know why this made me laugh, but it did. I hate that in video games, too.

Being threaded with only so someone can make AC. Fun thread, thanks for dropping it once you had enough comments, jackass.

hate getting excited about a comment from someone i've never threaded with before only to have it dropped once they get x comments. even moreso if you try and continue the cr later and get ignored or only get a few comments because, hey, they don't need you to pass activity now!

When any remotely interesting interaction with another character makes x & y everyone's ship. It's one thing to like them, it's another to always ask when they're getting together.

Sorry guys, I like my platonic best friends status, idg why everything that seems even remotely like good chemistry needs to be romantic.

This is made even worse when the other character's mun suddenly decides they're right and goes into OOC territory to convince you to ship with them. Hell no, I'd rather drop than be OOC for that shit.

I do enjoy playing out ships, but damnit, sometimes I just want to play out an amazing friendship.

de-aging plots. can we just stop with this already?

This and anything that goes into involuntary lovey-dovey crap. We can create our own pairings on our own, thank you. We don't need to have the game do it for us.

Re: +.05

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
For me that depends on the nature of the game. If it's a sex game, I expect events that will shake things up physically and emotionally and lead to strange pairings and awkward aftermaths.

Not as wild about it in other types of games. Ultimately, this is just very game theme dependent deal for me. It can go over well or completely stupid and contrived.

I love deaging plots.

So do I because the characters I play right now were completely different personality-wise as children and it's fun to get to explore those sides of them.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-10 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Especially since it's just an excuse to play tiny, "moe" characters.

Kids aren't always cute or adorably stupid. Depending on the character, they can be ignorantly blunt, awkwardly quiet, or obnoxiously curious. It's not always child = moe. That oversimplification of children drives me nuts.

If you want an excuse to play your character all moe or whatever, then I'd rather see a personality switch/adjustment plot instead.

Personally, I like de-aging events because it's canon that my character was an utter brat. But eh, to each their own. If you've experienced an influx of saccharine sweet woobie children, I don't blame you for being put off by an event like that.

They're so overdone, it's not even funny. That's not to say it can't be fun every once in a while, but if it's been less than a year since the last time you ran this kind of plot, and you have virtually the same cast you did the last time, you're just running the idea into the ground at that point.

Watching someone get polite, well-worded and reasonable crit then proceed to justify to themselves how it's wrong and therefore they don't have to follow it. Or they go to Plurk and present their ass for pats because OMG, SOMEONE CRITTED THEM so their friends reassure them YOU'RE THE BEST [X] EVER BB, YOU DON'T NEED TO CHANGE, HATERS GON' HATE, so they again can reason to themselves that it's okay to ignore the crit. Or they cry about their anxiety over having been told something is off about the way they play pretend over the internet. Or they turn it around and blame the crit-giver and make it out to be their fault.

Crit is not always right, granted. But I've seen so many people be encouraged to keep up with bad/inconsiderate habits this way, too (like chronic thread-dropping, character squatting, not following through on promised plots, OOCness, and so on), since they take anything less than ass-swaddling as a personal attack. It sucks, especially when it's a castmate and their absence is making it hard for you to do anything in the game. But oh wait, can't tell them that because you'll receive a guilt-trip.

THIS THIS THIS

I especially hate it when it's all of those at the same time. One or two things (just going to plurk for asspats or just blaming the crit-giver) I'm fine with, but I had one person who went and did all of that twice at me for giving crit for two of her characters on separate occasions. She even went and told me my crit is invalid because I never played the games, and that everyone else said she was fine so clearly I'm in the wrong. Fuck you, I'm your castmate. What the fuck?

And she was an extremely clingy castmate who practically told everyone in the chatroom I defriended her and proceeded to be all dramatic about it. Safe to say, I am so glad I am out of that game and away from that shitty girl.

Now every time I see either of her characters played by anyone, I cringe and walk away. Though I find it hilarious that she thinks I'd go out of my way to write a crit for her again after all that. I left the game largely because of you, why the fuck would I go and put effort for that again after knowing your shit oocly?

The sad thing is everyone treats her like she's the nicest person ever that can do no wrong, and if I said otherwise, I'm just being horrible. Yeah, I'm butthurt.

I had a cast mate do something similar to me. I critted them on some major voice issues I'd observed over the course of several months. I agonized over this crit (I didn't want it to come across as heavy handed or overly rude or something) and I shared it with a third party to proofread to be sure it was constructive and non-offensive, and I made sure to provide examples of what I was referring to in the crit. When it came time to go to their HMD, I made the decision to do so logged in.

Big mistake.

First they responded that they didn't see what I was talking about in the crit, so I provided another set of examples (to which there was no response on their end.) I later found out that they went to their plurk and proceeded to bitch about how ignorant and homophobic I am for daring to crit their openly gay character (spoilers: I'm a lesbian, and not once was the character's orientation referenced in the crit.) My cast mate claimed that my crit was invalid because I wasn't familiar with the canon (which is blatantly false considering I play from the same fandom and have played from it for several years.)

They eventually got another cast mate of ours to join in mocking me for being stupid and ignorant and an all around shitty person while slathering on the ass pats. 'The crit was obviously a personal attack! How dare that evil cast mate have concerns about your characterization? OMG NU BB UR SO GOOD!!! (cozy) <3!' That sort of thing.

But whatever. People can disagree, right? And because I didn't directly witness their meltdown and was only told about it by mutual friends, I chose to ignore it and carry on. I did however anonymously drop a line with the mods of my game about being uncomfortable with how they responded to my crit. But aside from that, I figured I could buck up and play on and just do what I could to have fun and deal with the OOCness only when necessary.

They then decided to take it out on my character. Their characters are best friends with mine in canon, and while I had concerns about the voice before, things just got progressively worse. Suddenly my character was rejected completely by her closest cast mates and things just got progressively more and more uncomfortable. The players both continued to make snide remarks about me in other people's plurks and for the first time ever my name showed up on an anon meme as being a shitty RPer.

It got so bad, I finally just dropped the character.

A few months after that, they both dropped the cast mates from our game, so I took that opportunity to reapp my character to the same game. And what happens? Hate secrets about me on RPS, finding myself namedropped both on RPanons and in my game's ACJ thread.

I literally have no problems with anyone else in my game. I didn't have any problems until I decided to log in and crit this one person and then they and their minion decided to go after me. The rest of my cast and the game at large have made it clear they're appalled by how they responded to the crit they were given (and continue to be given by other players, as it were.) But that hasn't stopped their weird fixation on me. They tried to start something about me a few memes back, which didn't take off because there isn't any wank fodder out there aside from my willingness to deliver crit logged in and the fact that I have visited ACJ (which honestly, anyone who claims they don't ever check in here is lying.) Which... isn't necessarilyy wanky in itself, as far as I'm concerned.

But they keep trying, bless them. We're not even cast mates anymore (one dropped from the game entirely) but they still make it incredibly obvious that it's them trying to stir things up. If it wasn't so pathetic and sad I might be flattered by it.

And holy crap this got waaaaay too long. Bullshit really builds up sometimes, I guess.

Do you know I once gave someone crit and got chewed out by their friend for using examples? Not even the examples I used in particular, but using examples at all. They thought it was the rudest thing I could have done.

The best part was while I was trying to figure out what they were saying, I asked them to give me a specific example of where I fucked up. They lost their shit and called me an idiot for not just getting it.
