my grandfather actually quit cold turkey right after the surgeon general's warning came out (he'd smoked for about 20 years). but like your dad, his withdrawal was really horrible.

Before my dad met my mother, he smoked for a while and during college, he decided to move back in with his parents in Europe. Since they really didn't like smoke, he quit cold turkey. He's never really mentioned any withdrawal, though.

My dad quit cold turkey the day he found out I had asthma. He had a lot of withdraw symptoms, though he quit drinking right around the same time so some of the crabbiness was from that too.
