It's less that there's cliques and more that a lot of the players are good friends. Friends like to play with friends. Some can be put off by that, it's understandable, but few if any of the "cliquey" players are unapproachable for plotting.

The hand-wringing over cliques is very high schoolish. We're all adults- if you want to play with certain characters, then (I'm sure this is real revolutionary) talk to them. Bring your ideas to the table. Post in the CR meme and respond to others, don't expect or think you're so entitled that people will automatically come to you. Building working relationships with your fellow players is key.

Also, don't ever think your plot ideas are stupid. This is a big one. Different characters need different motivations to move them forward in the game, so don't let yourself believe you've got a bad idea and psych yourself out before you've even spoken to someone about it. I've come up with some things I thought were lame, but a mention to other players and some mutual brainstorming has really got some great things off the ground.
