Well, in every writer's life there comes a point where they are enamored with taking things that are sweet and wholesome, and injecting it with shit-tons of violence and depressing shit because they think it makes them edgy and creative. This is usually around the 12-16 age range. Most manage to grow out of this by the time they get to their twenties.

Actually in my experience it seems to be something a lot of people grow into when they become afraid of adulthood and things associated with it, yet they've matured enough to need more stimulation than safe, comforting media for children contains, so they seek the best of two worlds by regressing to their nonthreatening and wholesome childhoods but also injecting it with violence and sex, resulting in these hideous creations from the adults who watch My Little Pony.

Or yeah they're teenagers who think they're being funny and cool or whatever.
