i don't judge the fuck out of you, but you need to know F/SN canon unless you're playing like, Ryuunosuke or Caster

And you need to acknowledge that it's everyone's right to go as DEEP or as shallow as they want to into the canon. Especially considering Nasu's narrative style.

F/Z can actually stand on its own easily without knowing Fate. Almost all the surviving cast (read: Those known in F/SN) are almost character 180s save for Gilgamesh and Saber.

Fate can stand on its own without actually knowing Tsukihime.

Kara no Kyoukai can stand on its own without knowing any of the later works.

KNOWING this shit in a collective only comes to issue if one wants in on all the in-jokes (which run rampant in the spinoffs and sequels. But each project stands on its own. Hell, you don't even need to know Fate/Stay Night to really enjoy Fate/EXTRA. Just be prepared for none of the F/E rules to apply to F/SN is all.

I get what you mean in your statement, but you're making your intention more difficult than what it needs to be.

inb4 what about the Materials. Only those of us who couldn't put down Fuyuki, Beast Lair, or 4chan really give a shit about little tidbits like the Five Magics, Rhastrad Lancer(s), Touko giving Shirou a spare body, Karen & Bazett being characters initially slated for Tsuki 2, etc. You don't need this knowledge to enjoy the canon(s). It just adds spice is all.

Wrong thread but you seem to know what you're talking about. How screwed would I be if I wanted to play a Tsukihime character and only know Tsukihime/KT/MB, Fate/SN/Zero, and kind of know KnK? I'm looking at playing either Akiha or Arcueid, if that matters.

If you know Tsukihime, then I'd think you're good for portraying any of those characters. Iunno if your concern is some castmate trying to drown you in INFOINFOINFOINFO (which, considering Type-Moon, is a valid concern), or if you're worried about stumbling characterization.

If it's the later, don't fret so much and take it at your pace—particularly with Arc (who actually doesn't get a hell of a lot of character highlighting in the followup material: Kagetsu & Melty). Her role's different. In Tsuki, she's a main heroine. In Melty, she's a plot advancer more or less. Kagetsu's just a fun game full of weird-but-fun facts that's fun to play through.

Akiha is more or less the same boat, save that Kagetsu Tohya provides a sidestory that wraps up/provides SUPER USEFUL bonus content on her Tsukihime Route. Said story can actually be picked up from a pdf document floating around the net if I'm not mistaken—playing through Kagetsu Tohya itself for it isn't exactly integral (but play it anyway—the game is really fun, if confusing and repetitive).

If your concern is the former, then don't hesitate to let your castmates know you're new to all of this and are taking it in a step at a time. Sensible playmates should be willing to help you out so fun can be had by all.

Tsukihime is not integral to Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero, or even Kara no Kyoukai in any form or fashion. Specifically, Touko Aozaki and even Ryougi Shiki do not figure in the Tsuki side of the TMverse (Save Melty Blood Actress Again, which iirc is just another What If scenario they cooked up to have Ryougi as a selectable character). You can fly just fine without knowing the other canon aspects.

Sorry for the teel deer.

Depends completely on your game setting and potential castmate, as anon above said. Akiha knows her stuff when it comes to Tohno family history, and Arc can infodump too when Ciel's not around (mainly Ciel route, for example). Unless you see yourself getting into situations that you'll need to explain their respective expertise in depth or get into serious fights (in which case you'll need to learn about Origami and... Arc's not so bad actually since jamjars probably won't allow you to keep Marble Phantasm) often, the canon itself ought to be enough. Sadly in Tsukihime's case, you find more overworld info outside of the VN, but you should be fine with what you already know. KnK helps, since it shows the other 3 families from the Demon Hunters Organization (composed of Nanaya, Ryougi, Asagami, and Fujyou) and explains more about the MEoDP. Tsukihime and KnK compliment each other better than Fate/. So I'd say no rush anon, but check KnK more out would be a nice idea, whenever you get around to it.

Risking that ill-mentioned Powerlevels thing, here, but I actually don't recall a game that would lock powers without explicitly mentioning that as part of the premise (like Amat or somesuch). You've been in a game where mods asked an Arcueid to dumb down her powers?

Though you are partially right on the overworld front. If it's the angle of having Arc infodump (which...she probably wouldn't do unless the person she was talking to deliberately asked something, so that's an easy exposition bullet to duck), then knowing more than Tsukihime can help.

As for knowing about the five hunting families: you'll get the most info out of that specifically from Hisui's route (Tsukihime) and the Red Demon God sidestory (Kagetsu Tohya). KnK doesn't really cover it all that well—a given, since it was the first work and wasn't even that expanded an idea at the time of its making. You can get away with skipping KnK on the MEoDP front, as well, thanks to Arc's endless pontification in her own route right up until Nero Chaos is killed. The other routes do well to flesh out how Tohno Shiki lives with such a power/curse.

Though I'd agree with anon and say check KnK out in your leisure time, anyway. It is a good, if difficult (lolnasuprose) read. Or watch it—ufotable did quite the adequate job.

Previous anon just going to address the issue with Arc since I pretty much agree with you about everything else. Her claws and strengths are fine, but Arc also has this "is always a few powerlevels stronger than whatever she's fighting". Recall that when Tsukihime starts she's been extremely weakened after Shiki got to her, but by the end of it, Roa would have been eliminated so she would've recovered her powers back. Something like the MP rips a hole in reality itself and can pretty much let Arc do whatever she wants, which is why I'd think it's reasonable to assume that most jamjars wouldn't allow something on that magnitude (maybe except joke games, you could probably also rework that ability for a fun player plot). It kind of falls into a similar category in terms of hax as Gil's Ea.

That depends entirely on the type of game you're apping to. If you want to play in a comedy/slice-of-life game or a crack game, you probably don't need to get very deep. The in-jokes really aren't that important and you can be funny without becoming dependent on them. And in all honestly, some of the persistent in-jokes are far too overplayed. Making up your own based on what you've studied about the character should suffice and might even spice things up a little.

If you're playing in a more serious game like a survival horror where wacky hijinks are not particularly appropriate or an action-heavy game where you'll need to know how NPs work, you'll need to go a little deeper. The TM wiki can give you everything you need to know about the mechanics, but take the character analysis with a grain of salt. It'll save you a lot of headaches later on to do your research now rather than having to go hunt it down when it pops up in RP.

Knowing FSN can be important depending on what scenarios you plan on doing or what might happen. For example, if you're doing a plot where your character sees into his or her canon future, knowing how FSN ends depending on which route you ultimately choose is pretty important. It can be helpful interacting with characters from FSN, though your character is going to be ignorant of what happens so it's not completely vital. Otherwise, it's helpful but not absolutely necessary.

Lastly, don't be afraid to ask your canonmates for help if something doesn't seem to make sense or you're unclear on something. The Nasuverse is pretty convoluted, but after a while you can start to make some sense of it so the confusion doesn't last forever.

I would agree that you can play from F/Z or F/SN without knowing anything about Tsukihime or Kara no Kyoukai but I really think that if you're going to play from either Fate canon, you should at least be familiar with the other one too because they are so directly connected. It adds a certain general framework that I think is helpful to have. But it also definitely depends on what character you're playing, as it matters more to some characters than it does to others. (IE if you're playing Shirou I think it's helpful to know Kiritsugu's backstory to give you an idea of what sort of a person Shirou was raised by.)

yeah it's everyone's right and i'm perfectly fine with people in just the plain old fandom only knowing F/Z, and I agree that each stands on it's own

But RPing is a different thing than being in the fandom.

This. RPing isn't the same thing as power level arguments and it demands a level of cooperation and knowing what you're doing.

... Or unless you're playing them taken from F/Z, and not later on in the timeline. What they choose to do later has nothing to do with how you'd play a F/Z-period character from a point when their outlook is totally different, so you're as fine reading up on F/SN on a wiki as playing/watching it.
