Last thing I saw was someone getting SO MAD that the... Richard in Luceti, I think? was being played in a way other than completely heterosexual. Haven't played Graces yet, but I have been assured that Richard does not actually come across as completely heterosexual in the game.

(Note: Before someone remarks on this; when I say "gayest", I don't just mean flamboyant. I mean everything from personality to habits to his interactions with other characters.)

richard comes across as having a really big really gay crush on asbel. says something along the lines of "that's why I love him so much," which I hold is a deliberate choice by the translation team -- there's ways to phrase what he said without the usage of "love," a really loaded word in the english language. the way he talks about asbel in general is really gay and his feelings toward asbel are explicitly compared to those of cheria, the love interest's, in the game text. also when everyone has to touch asbel for a plot point in the future arc and most people are ok with touching him on the shoulder or shaking his hand, richard outright carresses his cheek, so ...

so yeah, anyone who says that people who play richard as anything other than straight are yaoi fangirls, they don't know either jack or shit.

see what I mean? not to mention he was sort of posesed at the time and all if you recall

if you look at him in the epilogue arc or early stuff you could make the case of very closet friend easy, esp in the epilogue arc

so imo yeah it could be a crush but it could just as easily not be one and he's def not as ~the gayest ever~ as people make him out to be

oh yeah I'm just saying that interpreting him as gay isn't completely out of nowhere like it might be with other jrpg characters, there's definitely groundwork for people to go off of there and getting mad because that person plays him as gay is a little bit silly.

from what i know from people who played the original game, it was "love" in japanese too, so yeah, it's not a case of the translation adding subtext that wasn't originally there.

that's more along the lines of what I meant, yeah, that it seems like it was a very deliberately chosen word to mirror whatever the Japanese was because "love" is such a heavy word in English that I don't think they would have picked it unless they were sure it was the best choice.
