I had this reaction too and decided to check it out because surely it must be a masterpiece of storytelling based on how obsessed with it everyone suddenly is, and a few episodes later I still don't get it. It's just another anime, even if it has pretty animation.

Not gonna' lie, I love reading about other people's characters in the game but when I see "Fate/whatever" I instinctively hit mute. I mean I was tempted to check it out for a while because of all the plurking but I haven't had much interest in anime for a while, so I don't.
