The thing is that I kind of, as a mod, understand where they're coming from? Especially in a larger game I imagine it can be very difficult to know what to do in the event of an indefinite hiatus. I would probably inform them they have the maximum hiatus length, and if they need to can approach me about an extension... but I really think that it does eventually get to the point where it's basically character squatting. Don't get me wrong, situations like the other anons have mentioned suck hardcore, but at the same time if it's been, say, twice the maximum time and you still can't tell me when you're going to be back in the swing of things?
Well, I think at that point you probably should just drop and hope you can re-app your character when things are going better. It's not fair to you that you have to give up your character for something out of your control, no. But it's also not fair to anyone else that you keep getting passes on your activity and they can't play with your character, especially if you're being mum about the whole situation. (Mind you, I don't particularly care what the reason is for the hiatus. Simply because, no matter why you're on hiatus the fact remains that you are taking up a slot in the game and you are not playing. However, people do seem to be more sympathetic, in general, when they are given explanations for things. I'm not sure why.)
It's not all about YOU either, anon. No one is discounting your feelings or the death in your family, but you're not being reasonable to your mods or fellow players. It's selfish to hold onto a character that long without playing them, and given the circumstances I'm sure most mods would allow you to pick up where you left off.
