I'm not trying to be an ass, and let me start by saying I am sorry for your loss, but the illness and death of a close family member seems more to me like the sort of situation where someone should drop. Not forever, I mean definitely come back to the game when you're safe in your own skin again, but there's no time limit on the grieving process. No one knows how long your character will have to sit idle. It's a strain on mods who usually have a hiatus length cap to enforce and frustrating for your castmates/CR.
I'm not telling you what to do, and what's done is done, but I think that's a pretty clear case for dropping rather than taking a vague indefinite hiatus.
