I am going to delete all the dumb, aspergers worthy discussion threads.

this is not the place for talking about butts and farts and shrimp. take that to your plurk or rpanons.

also, to anyone in that plurk because i know you're furiously f5ing this meme and shlicking to the idea of being namedropped, maybe you should stop blaming the hate meme and start blaming the two-faced bitches you associate with who leak your private shit.

hth, mouthbreathing motherfuckers.

"Hey, Edgeworth, Gummy! Guess what? I was this random little girl you met and then conveniently forgot about until just now!"

Kay's addition to the cast would have worked better if Edgeworth and Gumshoe weren't already well-established characters imo.

They also could have found a way to work her in as someone they hadn't met before. She still could have been connected to the past case! But the way they pushed her into their backstory was pretty awkward, and I say this as someone who likes her

Man, I feel like the only person who didn't mind that plotline... I don't hear anywhere near as many people complaining about, like, Dahlia, who was Nick's evil ex who almost killed him that we heard nothing about until the third game! or whatever.

Sure, it's kind of cheesy, but... ace attorney.

It's more the fact that she calls Gumshoe a cutesy nickname and that Edgeworth treats her better than he does Gumshoe (or at least is more downright unkind to Gumshoe); it all just adds up with the backstory to something awkwardly fanficcy.

I hate how fandom is all up on Edgeworth's dick as much as the next person, but I kind of wish we'd find something else to complain about.

As much as Edgeworth fangirls are annoying, I find Daryan fangirls even worse, although granted, there are far less of them.

No, he's not secretly a good guy, stop trying to turn him into one with flimsy excuses that don't even make sense.

Urgh. This.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who wants to pick Daryan up at some point and has been trying to with come up with a reasonable motive for him, those fangirls drive me nuts. especially when it's obvious that 90% of the time it's so he can be shipped with Klavier.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If I hear one more of them claim that Daryan was "just trying to help a sick kid," I will flip a witness stand at them.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
What. How does "just trying to help a sick kid" even begin to justify killing a man, trying to frame another kid, or attacking a woman and giving her an injury that could have been fatal if she hadn't been found in time?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
LMFAO yes that is exactly what was happening in that case. My god, some people.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
...What.

I thought it was already obvious that Daryan was in it for the big bucks. Nowhere did it say or even imply that he was interested in "trying to help a sick kid".

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
If by "sick kid" you mean his bank account, then yeah, he was totally helping that poor, sick child

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-12 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's some ambiguity to Daryan's motives (why would he need money when he's a rock star?), but there's no damn ambiguity as to the immorality of them. And that's why I like him. FFS. If you want a bleeding heart find a different character.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-12 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish the game focused less on the money for Daryan because yeah, like you said, he's a rock star in a ridiculously successful band.

IMO, they should have gone more for the power angle with Daryan. The kid's dad wasn't just rich, he was a powerful and influential member of the courts. It would make more sense if Daryan wanted some kind of hold over the dad.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember the influential dad thing... but I don't remember anything especially conclusive from the money angle, either, tbh. Though I think that was probably the solution favored in-game.

But yeah, I just remember being really dissatisfied with the way his motives were portrayed. Though to be fair 'motive' has never been the most realistic factor in a PW case.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been able to think of a good explanation for why Daryan would be after money despite his profession(s) either, and I have to say I like the power angle a lot. The idea that he wanted to have the Chief Justice in his pocket for future influence makes much more sense.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Anon who'd like to pick up Daryan here! This is a very helpful thread for me, thank you everyone! I've always liked the idea that he was something of a thrill-seeker as well as kind of a power hound- essentially black-mailing one of the most powerful members of the justice system is pretty damn risky, after all, not to mention the risk of screwing with Borginian security in smuggling the thing in the first place.

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-13 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Original anon here, and yeah, I have food for thought now when I replay. Might give playing him a shot down the road too, we'll see. Good luck, fellow anon!

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I especially like the thrillseeker angle. The way I see it, he's going for the money for the same reason some people shoplift: it's not because he needs it, it's because he's getting his rocks off on how he's getting it.

oh and the power thing, too, but that's all ready been elaborated on

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
why would he need money when he's a rock star?

Why would Machi need money either when he's a very successful pianist living with an even more successful singer? Have I also mentioned that said singer views him as a son?

The discussion here did help me make sense of Daryan's motives in interpretation, but honestly it would have been better if the game actually explained why they did what they did; not handwave it by simply saying "no need for details, they just wanted money!".

Re: ACE ATTORNEY

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends how much money Machi needed, if it was an extreme figure that he couldn't have anticipated/saved for, then it makes sense (and that was teh sense I got of it)...but it is frustrating that they never say what exactly he needed it for. Especially since it's something that Lamiroir seemed unaware of.

Might be stretching over here, but AAI did kind of establish the idea of smuggling rings being involved with Borginia and some other countries. Even though it seems like that was resolved back then, it seems funny both times Borginia has been involved, so has smuggling. So it's definitely still a thing. GJ there on the "super strict security", guys.

You can think of it as Machi just needing money for whatever reason and turning to illegitimate sources out of desperation, yeah. But a lot of things could be done with a smuggling ring angle. Like it could be something similar to Armstrong's debt to Tender Lender, where he actually owed money to someone in the ring and was forced to cooperate. Except in this case, it could be like if he did this job for them and gave them the money, his debt would be forgiven. /shrug

It would make sense if there was some kind of third party involved anyway. We're talking about a kid who no one (including Lamiroir) even knew spoke English and a guy who both has never been out of the US and has never previously been seen interacting with Lamiroir, Machi, or LeTouse before. How would they even have met, contacted each other, trusted each other to go along with the plan, etc.? Some other go-betweens would at least explain that.

Regarding Daryan, I kind of want to give him a little benefit of the doubt on that, though. I completely agree that he's an asshole, but I think he was being sincere when he got all butthurt over someone insulting International Affairs. So I can't think of him as being so completely corrupt that he'd actively be part of a smuggling ring on the side. But he might have had some contacts that made access to it a viable option. (And who wouldn't be happy having a freaking IA detective on their side for something like this?)

tl;dr - how's about them smuggling rings?
