I think it depends on the kid and the attitude the parent takes when dishing the punishment. I got slapped in the face a couple times as a kid, but it just made me respect them less since it was always done in the heat of the moment. It pretty much made me think of them as irrational and hotheaded.

def. agree. I recall the one or two times I was hit out of anger with a lot more shame and discomfort than any of the times I was spanked for being willfully disobedient. there is a difference between the two.

I agree with you on that. My parents weren't out of control when they were spanking me. It wasn't a heat of the moment thing. I doubt I would have respected that at all. They always made it very clear what was coming and why. They also sat with me afterwards and made it clear that they didn't enjoy hurting me. It took a long time to get it through my head that my bad actions had consequences I'd rather not have to deal with, but when it did, it stuck. By the time I was a teen, I was a pretty good kid, not the willful hellion they started out with.
