This 'spanking your kid' = 'beating the shit out of your kid' false equivalency bullshit needs to stop. Either disagree with corporal punishment full stop or don't, don't conflate all corporal punishment into horrific beatings to make your position easier to argue. Don't be so goddamn lazy.

One of my parents spanked me as a kid - that is, I got rapped across the fingers a couple of times, smacked lightly on the behind, that kind of thing.

The other never spanked me (apart from ramming my head into a wall once), but instead tended to prefer punishment through public humiliation, psychological bullying and threats.

Anybody who tries to tell me the former was what mentally screwed me up as an individual can go and honestly fuck themselves. Here's a hint - parenting, like many things in life, is not black and white.
