Why are so many RPers who are 30+ totally batshit insane?

Obviously there are probably more crazy people who are younger, but the population of RP is younger. In my experience, off the top of my head of RPers over 30 I've only played with, only two of eight that weren't terrible in some ridiculous way from full out going crazy on people to having no IC/OOC divide at all.

Have I just been unlucky, or are older Rpers just psycho in general save for some exceptions?

no, it's not just you, anon. they apparently feel like they are entitled to be the way they are because they don't want to actually get off their computer to have a healthy balance between reality and roleplaying.

sad, really.

most of the 30+ rpers I know are pretty chill

I do notice older rpers tend to congregate so you may have stumbled upon a nest of batshit ones

people are more likely to remember an older batshit rper because of their age imo since it makes them stand out

I think it has to do with the way the culture of the hobby has changed over the years. I think perhaps that more of that behavior was tolerated when they were young and they just never really bothered to keep with the times? Honestly, a lot of the behavior I've seen from the 30+ RP set reminds me of the dudes who used to play Warhammer and D&D at the geek shop job I had in high school. Yeah, my perception is probably colored a lot by that comparison.

However, I have found some 30+ RPers who are entirely chill. The main difference I've found is that they're a lot more understanding of people who have a real sleep schedule/job/other responsibilities. At least more so than the usual college kids I see around games.

As someone 30+ who RPs on DW I'm very quiet about my age. I know several other 30+ players who are the same way. We kind of come out to each other like a secret club, but we try and keep distance from the womanchild psychos who make us look like fantasy-obsessed creepers.

I just want to point out also that Tally is 24, NOT in our group. She'll probably be the same when she's 30+ though, pulling the same antics. And really, that's how you get people in our age group who are psychos - they were psychos when they were 16, 22 and 27 also, there just wasn't DWRP for them to get noticed in yet.

I agree, I think most of the 30+ players are probably really chill and calm. And, as the playerbase ages further, I'm sure you'll find more and more 30+ players. I'm still in my mid-20s, but I can see myself still dabbling in RP in the future. As long as it doesn't consume my life, I'm okay with that.

The people who flaunt their age as if it means something, whine all day about being "old", and/or act off-putting in other ways have been doing so ever since they were young. Basically, they were drama llamas in their youth and have yet to change. Like above anon said, that's how you get absurdly immature 30+ players.

For what it's worth, I do know two players who are 30+. One is a super chill guy who doesn't really mention his age. Another is a woman who whines about her age, begs for attention, and has yet to grow up. It's just like with any age group, really. You'll find good ones and bad ones.

I'm over 30. I agree with most of what has been said in this thread. Every player I've ever had serious beef with was my age or older, and batshittery definitely lurks in this age bracket, but there are as many or more older players who are totally chill. I think the reason you see some crazy older players is that they're more likely to hang on to the hobby, and more likely to have the spare time to RP because of disability.

One thing, though... if I mention my age, or being "old," it's to joke about it. Keep that in mind as a possibility! Tone doesn't carry well online.

You're unlucky. Most older rpers just keep their age to themselves, mostly for fear of being thought odd. You probably play with a bunch of them without knowing.

As I get older and the general RP age stays the same, I'm terrified to reveal my age and be labeled as "that creepy old woman without a life". I'm just trying to have fun in the same hobby that was fun when I was a teenager. It feels weird when the new generation starts wondering why people our age don't send ourselves out to pasture.

The last thing I want is to be seen as insane or creepy, so I pretty much just try to avoid OOC interactions like the plague.

The only 30+ roleplayer I've met that was completely batshit insane is [plurk.com profile] enelar/[plurk.com profile] derpofhooves and she pretty much went into exile from the Internet after her insane grudgewanking got leaked here, so I think you're just very unlucky anon. Everyone else I can remember, and there's a lot of them, have been decent people.

Sucks that a few bad apples have to color a whole group though. Hope you have more luck with finding good rp partners in the future.

As a 30+ roleplayer, I'll say that you've probably just been unlucky. And more than likely, you've encountered at least a couple of chill 30+ RPers without realizing it. I generally don't bother sharing my age with people because I don't want them to be uncomfortable with RPing with me because I might be one of those batshit crazy 30+ roleplayers you've encountered.

Generally, anyone who takes RP overly seriously instead of viewing it as an enjoyable hobby wherein you write interactive stories with people on the internet? Is probably going to be batshit insane, regardless of what age they are.

I do tell people my age... I want the ones who aren't comfortable playing with an older player to be able to avoid me. Likewise, I never pursue ships.

Your second paragraph is the most important thing to remember.
