It's really a question of the amount of information though, because some things don't have a quick shorthand answer.

It is pretty unreasonable to expect that someone on the internet is going to type out for you a summary of, for example, a history that a whole tradition of authors have written dozens of books on. It's frankly not realistic to think that someone is going to boil that all down to the size of a single reply on a blog for you.

I'm not saying they shouldn't point you in the right direction and give you an idea where they're coming from, but if you really give a shit about knowing what they're talking about? At some point you can't expect them to do the work or just spoon feed you the compiled information from a dozen different 300 page history books.

There is a way to learn things without someone on the internet taking the time to explain them to you. It's called reading books that have already been written on a topic and making use of the time that published authors have already put in to doing the explaining.

I do agree with this wholeheartedly, but it seems as though a lot of the people who do this don't even bother with the "pointing people in the right direction" part. I usually end up engaging in SJ-based debates quite a lot, and so accordingly I like to keep a stock of links to blogs, articles and books for people who are actually interested in learning. I appreciate that this is an emotionally exhausting subject for many people- it is for me too!- but I already decided that if I'm going to engage in these conversations I need to be prepared to offer educational materials. No one goes into an argument thinking that they're wrong (trolls and debate team members excluded): while the tone people use can sometimes rankle and seem entitled or self-centered, if I want to get through to them I do need to meet them half-way.

That's what most people that combat social shit to - nothing too special, I do that myself.

I've yet to see a person other than GNN that's actually aggressive about this and doesn't have any links at all. I suspect they aren't anywhere as common as some people claim they are.

To be fair, GNN has about a dozen sockpuppets, so it's easy to think that little shit is more than one person.
