not quite a pet peeve but I don't get the point of having reserves and app challenges.

doesn't allowing app challenges negate the point of reserving at all? it's just a notification for the mods that X is going to app Y. which is fine but it's not a reserve and they should use a different word.

it's like saying you can buy a ticket for a play only you might have to prove to the ticketmaster that you're more worthy to attend than this other person who wants that seat.

My best guess is that it's so that the mod team doesn't have to wait until the entire app period is over to start processing applications, as long as the reserver submits theirs early on.

And in the case that the reserver doesn't end up applying, someone else interested doesn't have to wait until the next app cycle.

It's basically giving people a chance to reserve a spot in the app pool. Another person (or two or however the hell many) other people might put in an app for the character, but the person who reserved can be certain they'll get their app looked at before any decision's made, provided they get it in on time.

That's all a reserve's ever been, really - even without challenges, it doesn't guarantee your app will be accepted, it just guarantees you a shot at it.
