fair enough for repeat offenses, but i think if they just do it the once they should probably get the benefit of the doubt. when my dad got really ill and we were uncertain what was going to happen, i did tell my mods about it (we're a tight group, so i didn't have the same problem sharing that anon above did) and concessions (i think that's the word, english is not my mother tongue so i'm sorry if it isn't) were made so i could go on hiatus without an end date, but looking back i think if i hadn't wanted to share or felt comfortable sharing i probably would have just said "i don't know how long, but i'm going to be gone" and left it at that, because it was a huge mess and nobody really had any idea how things were going to go. so i think maybe the first time for a player in a game let them have the benefit of the doubt and the next time it happens tell them it's not supposed to be a habit.

Again, call for the maximum amount of time that you can hiatus. Real life is more important than roleplay. You shouldn't let your pretend fun times get in the way of the things that you have to do in real life. You don't have to make excuses if you're not comfortable with telling the mods. If you tell us, we might give you a leeway. If you don't then, sorry. Mods aren't mind readers. We don't know if you're slacking off, being overly dramatic over something or really going through a real life crisis and we have more things to worry about than the daily life of one player, which is that player's responsibility.

So excuse me if I find players irresponsible for calling an indefinite hiatus out of the blue. They're not the one doing all the accounting for the players in their game.

Wow. You're kind of an asshole.

It's not all about YOU and what YOU are doing. Jesus Christ.

The thing is that I kind of, as a mod, understand where they're coming from? Especially in a larger game I imagine it can be very difficult to know what to do in the event of an indefinite hiatus. I would probably inform them they have the maximum hiatus length, and if they need to can approach me about an extension... but I really think that it does eventually get to the point where it's basically character squatting. Don't get me wrong, situations like the other anons have mentioned suck hardcore, but at the same time if it's been, say, twice the maximum time and you still can't tell me when you're going to be back in the swing of things?

Well, I think at that point you probably should just drop and hope you can re-app your character when things are going better. It's not fair to you that you have to give up your character for something out of your control, no. But it's also not fair to anyone else that you keep getting passes on your activity and they can't play with your character, especially if you're being mum about the whole situation. (Mind you, I don't particularly care what the reason is for the hiatus. Simply because, no matter why you're on hiatus the fact remains that you are taking up a slot in the game and you are not playing. However, people do seem to be more sympathetic, in general, when they are given explanations for things. I'm not sure why.)

We can only cater to your needs so much.

Please read your last sentence to yourself.

It's not all about YOU either, anon. No one is discounting your feelings or the death in your family, but you're not being reasonable to your mods or fellow players. It's selfish to hold onto a character that long without playing them, and given the circumstances I'm sure most mods would allow you to pick up where you left off.
