i think about it a lot, but sometimes i feel it's not my place to do so.

I think that if you consider yourself a friend and have the ability to do so, well... If not you, then who? There is the chance that the action might backfire and make things worse, but I think she needs to see that her threats are taken seriously by someone and either learn to cut it out and/or seek help.

Re: da

see, i think that too but i'm afraid of the consequences she'd have to face. on the other hand, she really needs a wake-up call. we, as friends, aren't getting through to her and it's embarrassing that, after all this time, she sees us as her commodities. hence why we're not important enough to her unless we tell her she's amazing or tag with her or w/e the fuck she wants us to do

:c

well, exactly. She's remained static long enough. this is the step that's needed.

I honestly don't even know what happens if you call the cops on someone that's threatening suicide, so... Yeah. You taking the consequences she'd have to face into consideration is honestly being a way better friend than she deserves at this point.

From this end, it seems like a lot of her cries of suicide are just for the attention. But if you ever get a gut feeling that she might actually do it or she says she's going to and logs off for a long time, I say go ahead and make the call. It could be a false alarm and you could get a ton of shit for it, but on the off chance that it's the real deal, well... Consequences are a lot worse there.

Generally, the cops will go perform what's called a "welfare check". If when they arrive at the scene they see any signs that the person has harmed themselves or is incapacitated, they'll summon paramedics to deal with it. Depending on where she lives, the laws could differ pretty dramatically. In a lot of places, hospitals are allowed to hold someone for a 72 hour evaluation period. The person will be seen by psychologists, and if it's determined that they're a threat to themselves, a judge can order them committed involuntarily.

If the cops arrive and nothing has happened, whoever makes the call is NOT going to get in trouble with direct evidence that suicide was threatened, which would be the Plurk or chat log where it took place. It's worth doing if for no other reason than it could give her a serious wake-up call that when you say this kind of shit, it has serious consequences, such as police at your house and the chance that you could wind up committed, which frankly it seems like she needs to be.

Huh. Good to know! I'd been in a situation where a friend kept crying suicide, but I never found out what would happen since me finally threatening to call the cops snapped them out of it. (Not in a "Not that!"/repeats again later way, but in a "I need help if this is what it's come to" and sought help way.) I had a hunch nothing awful would happen to either of us if it turned out they weren't serious about it, though, and I cared enough about that person that I was willing to find out.

Honestly, I'm just worried that Tally won't take it as well. I mean, I can just see her missing the point of it and adding "(whoever) called the cops on me" to her list of sob stories to twist around on Plurk, you know? I sure hope that doesn't happen if(/when?) anon with her info makes the call, but it really is a "hope for the best, expect the worst" case with this gal.

http://www.mind.org.uk/help/medical_and_alternative_care/how_to_help_someone_who_is_suicidal#help

"In an emergency

If you feel someone is in real danger of suicide, has a mental health problem and will not approach anyone for help, you may want to think about contacting social services. Under the Mental Health Act 1983, a person can be treated without their consent. This is, inevitably, a heavy responsibility and can lead to the person being detained under the Mental Health Act (see Mind’s booklet 'The Mental Health Act 1983: an outline guide')."

doesn't look that different to me.

Thanks for the info, anon.

I have to admit that I did bad, though, by not taking into account where she lived. It was really thoughtless of me.

It works almost exactly the same way in the united kingdom. The police do a welfare check if they receive a call and if there's evidence and/or two different people (nearest relatives) vouch for the fact that the subject is a danger to themselves, they can get involuntarily sectioned for an emergency 72 hour evaluation period by doctors, then possibly up to one or six months for assessment, at the end of which they can be made to accept treatment.

tl;dr take off your British Indignation hat, anon.

Dude, that's why I said depending on where she lives, the laws could differ pretty dramatically. Way to not read anything except what you wanted to see so you could wank about it pointlessly.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I just asked my mom (she's been a nurse forever) about what would happen in this situation (somebody threatens suicide, somebody calls the police, it's a false alarm) and the answer is: they ask if they need psychiatric help. If the answer is yes/unsure/upset, they take them to the hospital.

Otherwise? Nothing. It happens all the time. So don't worry about the consequences.
