THINGS YOU HATE ABOUT BEING A MOD

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Forever and for always, grown adults acting like spoiled children over the most petty and stupid things. They throw tantrums when they don't get their way, they expect us to read their minds instead of just spelling out what it is they want or are unhappy about, and they get depressed when someone gives them critique about their playing, no matter how respectful they are.

It seriously makes me wonder how some of them function outside of RP if their reaction to every minor inconvenience is making a huge production of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
To quote Louis C.K., "How quickly the world owes you something you didn't know even existed just a minute ago!"

I see them bitch and moan about shit not being there that they didn't even fucking think of until I announced that I was working on it. Never announcing what my future fucking project are ever again, they get to be a surprise so I don't see people griping about stuff taking too long to be finished.

Not reading the fucking accepted message; guys, if it didn't have anything important in it, it wouldn't be a paragraph with links and bolded text it would be a WELCOME TO THE GAME and that would be it. READ IT FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY.

Coming to me asking for the plurk/IM handles of the other mods. BOY IT'S NOT LIKE WE HAVE A MOD CONTACT POST OR ANYTHING.

Making a drop post to the OOC comm but not actually commenting to the game's drop post, or even following the directions on the drop post (like leaving the comms, etc). It makes things more annoying to keep track of.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-30 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really hate the thing about people not commenting on the drop post. It's not that hard to type up a few things so they don't get lost when lists are being updated.

Players replying to posts without actually reading the damn thing and therefore making us go through the extra work of repeating information to them. And then they get huffy they have to change a comment.

Players not reading the damn rules and then getting mad when we call them out for breaking them. Or on the opposite side, them starting shit because another player did something they didn't like and then getting made we don't have rules policing other people damn opinions.

Players who spend more time bitching about the game and their fellow players than playing and then complain when they fail AC

The fact that these supposed adults can't go ten minutes without throwing tantrums like toddlers over everything little thing.

Players who expect you to have no life and to always be around for them 24/7. God forbid I need to run out to the store or something, I might miss there hundred pms about something trivial.

The fact that modding ruins wanting to play.

especially players who expect you to be around 24/7. i am so sorry that i have a job that requires me to actually work and be away from a computer/my phone for hours at a time. i am so sorry i sometimes run errands and spend time with my family and sleep and want to read a book or play video games on occasion. it's so hard for you to wait half a day for a reply to your question or plotting request, i know.

modding ruined me for play too, when i did it

Hiatus length: Indefinite

Can't you give a rough estimate at least?

While we're at it, players who use hiatuses to get out of AC and then complain about their lack of CR.

I ... okay. I have claimed an indefinite hiatus length. I am guilty of that. But here's the thing about this sometimes: you really can't know when you'll be able to get back into things, sometimes.

My indefinite hiatus was related to the illness (and then death) of a sibling; I didn't share this with anyone in the game or with anybody I know online (primarily because, to be very frank and in the best way possible, what goes on in my family is really none of their business and I am under no obligation to share that with them). Sometimes people don't feel comfortable sharing that kind of thing and don't know when things will get better.

So ... you know, maybe it's worth cutting some slack, sometimes. You never know.

Then claim the maximum length that you're allowed to hiatus. I'm sorry for your loss and all but I've seen some people do this repeatedly to get past AC.

fair enough for repeat offenses, but i think if they just do it the once they should probably get the benefit of the doubt. when my dad got really ill and we were uncertain what was going to happen, i did tell my mods about it (we're a tight group, so i didn't have the same problem sharing that anon above did) and concessions (i think that's the word, english is not my mother tongue so i'm sorry if it isn't) were made so i could go on hiatus without an end date, but looking back i think if i hadn't wanted to share or felt comfortable sharing i probably would have just said "i don't know how long, but i'm going to be gone" and left it at that, because it was a huge mess and nobody really had any idea how things were going to go. so i think maybe the first time for a player in a game let them have the benefit of the doubt and the next time it happens tell them it's not supposed to be a habit.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-01 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, call for the maximum amount of time that you can hiatus. Real life is more important than roleplay. You shouldn't let your pretend fun times get in the way of the things that you have to do in real life. You don't have to make excuses if you're not comfortable with telling the mods. If you tell us, we might give you a leeway. If you don't then, sorry. Mods aren't mind readers. We don't know if you're slacking off, being overly dramatic over something or really going through a real life crisis and we have more things to worry about than the daily life of one player, which is that player's responsibility.

So excuse me if I find players irresponsible for calling an indefinite hiatus out of the blue. They're not the one doing all the accounting for the players in their game.

Wow. You're kind of an asshole.

It's not all about YOU and what YOU are doing. Jesus Christ.

The thing is that I kind of, as a mod, understand where they're coming from? Especially in a larger game I imagine it can be very difficult to know what to do in the event of an indefinite hiatus. I would probably inform them they have the maximum hiatus length, and if they need to can approach me about an extension... but I really think that it does eventually get to the point where it's basically character squatting. Don't get me wrong, situations like the other anons have mentioned suck hardcore, but at the same time if it's been, say, twice the maximum time and you still can't tell me when you're going to be back in the swing of things?

Well, I think at that point you probably should just drop and hope you can re-app your character when things are going better. It's not fair to you that you have to give up your character for something out of your control, no. But it's also not fair to anyone else that you keep getting passes on your activity and they can't play with your character, especially if you're being mum about the whole situation. (Mind you, I don't particularly care what the reason is for the hiatus. Simply because, no matter why you're on hiatus the fact remains that you are taking up a slot in the game and you are not playing. However, people do seem to be more sympathetic, in general, when they are given explanations for things. I'm not sure why.)

I'm not trying to be an ass, and let me start by saying I am sorry for your loss, but the illness and death of a close family member seems more to me like the sort of situation where someone should drop. Not forever, I mean definitely come back to the game when you're safe in your own skin again, but there's no time limit on the grieving process. No one knows how long your character will have to sit idle. It's a strain on mods who usually have a hiatus length cap to enforce and frustrating for your castmates/CR.

I'm not telling you what to do, and what's done is done, but I think that's a pretty clear case for dropping rather than taking a vague indefinite hiatus.

Co-mods who never do anything. They "never have time" for their mod duties (yet, strangely, this doesn't them from spending all day tagging in their other games and/or dicking around in open memes) so at least one other co-mod ends up doing more than their fair share of the work. Their characters never do anything in the game, they don't seem invested in the game at all, yet they never just give up the ghost and drop or give up their modship. When called out on it, they get better for a few weeks at most then go back to being a flake. And since your other co-mods see nothing wrong with this and it's not solely your decision to kick them out, they stay on the mod team far longer than they should.

Players who throw tantrums about not getting accepted and bring up ~all~ of their previous RP experience. WELL, BUB, IF THOSE OTHER GAMES LET YOU IN, then you go play there! Not here!
